According to a report by Channels Television on Sunday March 23, 2025, Obasanjo who was speaking at a World Water Day event highlighted that the Oyan Dam, originally designed to provide water and power to Ogun and Lagos States, has been neglected.
He pointed out that, as a result, residents in Abeokuta have turned to drilling boreholes, which could lead to severe water shortages in the future.
Obasanjo stressed the importance of strategic water management for food security and sustainability, noting that rain-fed agriculture alone cannot guarantee success due to irregular weather patterns. He emphasized that the river basin projects he initiated aimed to ensure year-round farming through effective irrigation.
Additionally, he pointed out that the Oyan Dam, with its potential to generate 9 megawatts of power, could significantly alleviate Nigeria’s electricity challenges if properly utilized.
The Managing Director of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, Adedeji Ashiru, praised Obasanjo’s foresight in creating the river basins and highlighted ongoing efforts to boost agricultural production and flood control.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
