Peter Obi, a 2023 Labour Party presidential contender and former governor of Anambra State, described how former President Olusegun Obasanjo stepped in during his 2006 impeachment. “They were begging my house not to impeach me, and they were in PDP while I was in APGA. And they were begging. The president was calling me to say, ‘Peter, are you OK?. Are you safe?’.

Even when I was impeached, Mr. Obasanjo called me and said, ‘Peter, are you OK?. Are you safe?’” Obi recounted.

Obi was impeached by the Anambra State House of Assembly in November 2006 just months after assuming office.

However, the judiciary later overturned the impeachment reinstating him as governor in February 2007. His revelation shows the political dynamics of that era where leaders prioritized stability over party differences.

Reflecting on the incident, Obi compared it to today’s political situation suggesting that such gestures of concern from the presidency are rare.
