Okeke, whose husband Christopher passed away, shared the harrowing details of her plight during a visit to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Awka, where she met with the Commissioner for Women Affairs on Thursday.
The troubles for Okeke began when her husband, who had been living in Sierra Leone, fell critically ill and was brought back to Nigeria for medical treatment. It was during this difficult time that Okeke alleged her husband’s relatives started to interfere with his care and the decision-making process.
“The people went to the extent of bringing back the ex-wife of my husband’s father who was divorced many years ago and who bore no child before leaving, inviting her over to come and take over and occupy the majority of the property of my husband,” Okeke recounted, her voice laced with anguish.
Okeke claimed that the relatives summoned her to town meetings, where they accused her of failing to inform them about her husband’s health status and barred her from participating in crucial decisions regarding his treatment. This isolation and lack of support during such a trying period has left the widow deeply distressed.
The harrowing ordeal did not end with her husband’s passing. Okeke reported that the harassment and intimidation have continued, with her late husband’s relatives wrongfully seizing her property.
“Since the death of my husband, they have been intimidating me, harassing me, and they have taken over the property of my late husband, and they have not allowed me to do anything,” she lamented, her voice quivering with emotion.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
