According to him, the mechanic had just completed repairs on his wife’s Toyota Highlander and called to inform him that the vehicle was ready for pickup.
“We were talking on the phone, and he said, ‘Come, the car is ready,’” Oladipo recalled.
Moments later, as Oladipo was nearing the location near the OPAY building, he received another call from the mechanic. “I told him I was just a minute away,” he said.
However, tragedy struck as a truck carrying gas reportedly lost its brakes and became uncontrollable.
“We saw the trailer. It had permanently lost its brakes. We later learned that the driver was shouting, ‘No brake! No brake!’ but because our windows were wound up, we didn’t hear it,” Oladipo explained.
Realizing the impending danger, he quickly tried to warn the mechanic. “I started parking and calling him to tell him to abandon the car and save his life,” he said.
But before his warning could reach, disaster struck. “And then there was an explosion,” he added, his voice filled with emotion.
The mechanic tragically lost his life in the explosion, alongside other victims caught in the inferno.
The incident once again raises concerns about road safety and the regulation of heavy-duty vehicles transporting hazardous materials within congested urban areas.
