Speaking to reporters in Port Harcourt, the group’s Director General, Johnson Georgewill, stressed that maintaining an Ijaw governor aligns with the principles of fairness and equity. He explained that the RRM, a political organization aligned with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, had worked relentlessly to secure an Ijaw candidate’s victory in the last election.
Georgewill emphasized that the Rivers State House of Assembly has a constitutional mandate to oversee the executive branch and hold the governor accountable. He asserted that Fubara had committed offenses that could warrant impeachment, adding that should the Assembly proceed with his removal, it was only right that another Ijaw leader be selected to complete the tenure.
He also condemned threats of violence from certain individuals opposing the governor’s removal, dismissing them as unlawful and unnecessary. Citing Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, he reminded the public that state legislatures have the authority to impeach a sitting governor if found guilty of serious misconduct.
Georgewill pointed out that outside Bayelsa, the Ijaw people have struggled to produce governors in states like Akwa Ibom, Delta, Edo, Ondo, and Rivers, reinforcing the need to protect their current position in Rivers leadership.
