To protest the planned Civic Reception for Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, hundreds of Kalabari women in Rivers State have marched to the streets and blocked entrance to their kingdom in a dramatic show of defiance. The reception, organized by the NEW Associates, was set to take place in Abalama, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, on March 15, 2025.
According to Vanguard, opposition to the event had been mounting after the King of Abalama Kingdom, His Royal Highness King Big Tom-Tom, publicly called for its cancellation.
It was also reported that the monarch made it clear that his community was not open to political gatherings at this time.
