The State House of Assembly is purposefully putting up barriers to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office, according to ARISE Analyst Mahmud Jega, who examined the current political situation in Rivers State in an interview with Arise News. The Assembly has the numbers to overthrow the governor, with 27 of the 35 MPs allegedly supporting Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Beyond having the numbers, Jega explained that the final hurdle in the impeachment process is the Chief Judge, who is responsible for constituting a panel to investigate the charges against the governor. If the panel clears Fubara of wrongdoing, the impeachment proceedings must be dropped and cannot be revived within the life of the current Assembly. This, according to Jega, is why the Assembly is also targeting the Chief Judge, fearing that an unfavorable panel ruling could permanently derail their impeachment efforts.
“They’re setting a trap and more than that, they have the numbers to impeach him. 27 out of I think 35 or so. They have the overwhelming number. The remaining obstacle in the impeachment process is the Chief Judge because when you pass an impeachment resolution, you send it to the Chief Judge to constitute the panel that will investigate the petition, and if the panel returns a not guilty verdict, then you must drop the impeachment charge and you cannot raise it again within the life of the current Assembly… That is what the Rivers State Assembly is afraid of, which is why they’re also going after the Chief Judge,” Jega stated.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
