A 30-year-old prison guard from south-west London named Linda De Sousa Abreu was given a 15-month prison sentence for having an intimate relationship with a prisoner in a London jail. When De Sousa Abreu performed the intimate act on the prisoner in his cell at HMP Wandsworth, she was on duty and in uniform. Another inmate was there, recording the interaction on a cell phone and commentating. In the about four and a half-minute-long video, De Sousa Abreu was seen enthusiastically engaging in the exercise.
The indictment said that De Sousa Abreu “wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public’s trust in the office holder by engaging in an improper act with a prisoner in a prison cell” .
De Sousa Abreu pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office at Isleworth crown court in July last year. She was arrested at Heathrow airport while attempting to fly to Madrid, after notifying the prison of her travel plans.
Judge Edmunds sentenced De Sousa Abreu to 15 months in prison, stating that her actions had compromised her role as an officer and undermined discipline within the prison.
