Ukrainian forces have reportedly made significant tactical advances in a fresh offensive within the Russian region of Kursk, according to military experts and the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Geolocated footage released on January 5 reveals that Ukrainian forces have successfully advanced in the fields southwest and south of Berdin in the Kursk region, and have even entered the southern part of the settlement. The Washington-based think tank confirmed the advancement, noting that this operation forms part of Ukraine’s ongoing military actions aimed at regaining lost ground.
While the Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that the Ukrainian offensive, which began on Sunday, had been repelled, reports indicate that heavy fighting continues in the region, with no clear signs of a decisive end to the conflict. The tactical advances made by Ukrainian troops in Kursk represent another chapter in the broader conflict, which has seen ongoing clashes over contested territory.
Despite several attempts, Russian forces have not been able to fully recapture the areas now targeted by Ukrainian forces. Although Russia has gradually managed to push back some of Kyiv’s forces, it has failed to regain full control of key regions. As part of the ongoing military operations, thousands of North Korean troops have also been deployed to assist in the Kursk operations, according to recent reports.
In its latest update on the conflict, the ISW noted that Ukrainian forces resumed offensive operations in multiple areas within the Ukrainian salient in Kursk Oblast (province), making tactical gains on January 5. In response, Russian forces counterattacked, advancing southeast of Sudzha and intensifying their resistance against Ukrainian attacks near Korenevo and north of Sudzha
