Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, the suspect who was detained on Saturday, gave contradictory claims when he was questioned on Sunday night, according to police sources who spoke to SaharaReporters. On Monday, the Anambra State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) denied that the suspect is a physician.
Ikechukwu is not a registered member of the NMA, according to a statement from the organization’s State Secretary, Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, which denied accusations that he is associated with the medical field. “The online and newspaper publications that claimed that a doctor shot an EFCC officer at Awka have caught the attention of the leadership of NMA Anambra State,” the statement said.
“Despite dealing in medical supplies and being addressed as a doctor, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu is not a medical doctor—not even an academic doctor—as the media has widely reported,” the NMA stressed. Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu is not a member of the NAUTH personnel, as the NAUTH management has already refuted, the statement added.
No member was able to recognize Ikechukwu as a coworker or association member, the NMA continued. Additionally, according to police sources, the suspect acknowledged under interrogation that he had made up a medical claim because “people call him ‘Doctor.'” Furthermore, Ikechukwu changed his previous claim that his father had a license for the firearm used in the incident by asserting that it was supplied by someone else.
“The suspect has changed his mind. Because people call him “Doctor,” he told the police yesterday night that he claimed to be a doctor to them, according to a police source. After claiming to be the gun’s owner and trying to get his son bail, the suspect’s father eventually declined to give a written statement attesting to his ownership. The father initially claimed the gun belonged to him when he hurried to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to obtain bail for him.
